Aputure 300d ii Review - An LED video light with power!

As mentioned in the previous blog, Aputure Lights have become our company’s go-to source for lighting scenes.

In 2020, Apurture released a brand new light called the “300X,” which is an update to the “300D mark ii.” The advantage of the “300X” is it's bi-color, however, gels can also help achieve most desired color temperatures.

Aputure products mix value, durability and helpful features with a price point that is approachable for the prosumer market. Essentially, the “300D mark ii” is a more powerful “120D mark ii.” The light is a little more than two times as bright as the “120D mark ii” and offers extra features.

One of the key differences between the “300D” and the “120D” is the yoke - it’s a bit taller, allowing full 360 degree rotation.

The other major difference is the power supply. On the “120D,” the power box clips on and hangs off the light stand. While this system works okay, the power supply for the “300D mark ii” uses v-mount batteries or the locking Neutrik power connector. The mount for the power supply has metal feet and a quick-release plate. This design is much more secure and allows for easy positioning up and down the light pole.

The “300D mark ii” also has a brightness advantage over the “120D.” When in an environment that is already bright, especially when using any kind of softbox or diffusion material, the extra power of the “300D mark ii” is crucial.

On paper, the “120D mark ii” is equivalent to a 1k tungsten light. However, the “300D ii” is a better equivalent and definitely brighter than our company’s tungsten 1k. The “300D ii” works very well as a key light, as it's got plenty of headroom in the brightness department.

As with all of Aputure lights, the “300D ii” has a Bowens mount, meaning any modifier for photography or other video purposes can be used, such as umbrellas, softboxes, dish reflectors, fresnels, spotlights, or barn doors. This flexibility is what makes Aputure lights so versatile.

Another key benefit of the “300D” is the use of the “Sidus link application.” This application from Aputure allows the user to control the lights in their ecosystem. The “120D mark ii” does not have this feature, giving another leg up to the “300D.”

The “120D mark ii” has a little antenna for the wireless remote, whereas the “300D” has the antenna built into the top of the power supply.  However, the Aputure remotes are universal, meaning they can control both the “120D” and “300D” lights.

Another smart feature Aputure incorporated into the “300D” is upgradable firmware. There is a USB port on the power supply, meaning as Aupture introduces advancements, the light can plug directly into the computer and update.

The “120D” has a very high CRI rating and both the ”300D” and the “120D” are tuned to 5500 Kelvin, which is a perfect daylight color temperature. Every Aputure light is tuned to this color, meaning they match seamlessly when used simultaneously. As stated in previous blogs, having a high CRI means the colors on screen will pop and look true-to-life.

Another major difference between the “300D mark ii” and the “120D mark ii” is the case itself. Aputure is known for providing quality cases for all their lights, however the “300D” case is even sturdier than the “120D.” The case has a soft padded interior, with numerous pockets and storage compartments. The case is so sturdy, it can hold up to 100 kilograms, making it an effective Apple box or even a seat for talent on set.

When our company purchased the “300D mark ii,” it was around $1,200 to $1,300 dollars, making it about twice the price of the “120D mark ii.” There are some great convenience factors with the 300D, but when filming a scene that doesn’t require quite as much output, the “120D mark ii” is sufficient. However, in order to ensure plenty of headroom and light on set, the “300D mark ii” is the answer.

Although the price may seem high compared to other competitors in the market, Aputure is competing at a very low price point when put up against equivalent lights. For instance, the “300D mark” has similar pro level features to ARRI lights, including the CRI, the single point light source, the build quality, and the support, however, it’s about a third of the cost. The Aputure lights many features make for a high-end product at a reasonable price.

All in all, Aputure is the perfect option for any independent filmmaker looking to upgrade productions without breaking the bank. At the end of the day, financing a dependable light source is always a bright investment!
